Dwight H. O'Keefe, Jr.

Mr. O'Keefe was born Dec. 18, 1913 in Springfield the son of Dwight H., Sr. and Anna Louise Young O'Keefe. He married Nancy Nuess June 7, 1942 and she preceded him in death in 2006.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946 earning the rank of Captain. He was Owner O'Keefe Insurance Agency from 1946 to 1975 and Lee-O'Keefe Insurance Agency from 1975 to 1991.

Mr. O'Keefe served on the Springfield Board of Education from 1951to 1955 and the Sangamon County Board from 1959 to 1963. He served as Springfield Commisioner of Public Health and Safety from 1963 to 1967 and as Sangamon County Circuit Clerk from 1968 to 1972. He was the Campaign Chair of the Springfield and Sangamon County United Way in 1957 and was President of the American Business Club in 1948 and 1949. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Illini Country Club and Sangamo Club.

He is survived by his son, Dwight H.(wife, Mary) O'Keefe, III of Springfield and his daughter, Katherine L.(husband, Edward D., Jr.) McNamara of Edwardsville; a brother, Robert(wife, Ning) O'Keefe of Springfield; grandchildren, Patrick W.(wife,Carole) O'Keefe, Edward D. McNamara,III, Michael S. O'Keefe and Daniel S. O'Keefe; great grandchild Liam W. O'Keefe.

The family is being served by Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel, Springfield where a memorial gathering will be held Saturday Dec. 13, 2008 from 2:00 PM till 4:00 PM. Interment will be held at a later date.
