

Edward Charles Schafer, 68, of Springfield, IL, passed away at 6:01 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Memorial Medical Center. Edward was born March 31, 1942 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Edward Ferguson and Edith Louise Miller Schafer. Edward retired from Hobbs as an accountant and was a private tax preparer for more than 30 years. He proudly served our country in the Army National Guard. He was a very spiritual man who enjoyed his family and cars. Edward was a hardworking, loving and unselfish man who was a friend of many. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, Mark (wife, Alyssa) Schafer; two daughters, Lisa Louise (husband Derik) DeConinck of Bloomfield Hills, MI and Susan Lynn Schafer of Chicago, IL; six grandchildren, Zachary, Ellie, Emmelyn, Elizabeth, Olivia and Evan; former wife of 40 years, Mary Schafer of Springfield, IL; his dear friend, Barbara Brown of Chatham, IL; two sisters, Judy Dressendorfer of The Villages, FL and Patricia (husband, Ray) Mosley of Whitney, TX; and one niece and three nephews. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. A memorial gathering will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL. The memorial gathering will begin with a eulogy service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Edward Schafer Memorial Fund to be used for a memorial in his honor, United Community Bank, 301 N. Main St., Chatham, IL 62629.
