I wish we, his family, had been notified of his passing. For years, I have been trying to locate him, unaware that he had been living in Jacksonville—or that he had already passed away. He was my uncle, and as a child only five years younger than him, I remember how his face would light up when someone played with him or made him laugh.

He came into this world as a gift to so many. My grandparents loved him dearly, and we never stopped caring about him. Tragically, once he was placed in the care of the state of Illinois, our family was never informed of where he was or how he was doing.

It breaks my heart that we were not given the chance to say goodbye, to honor his life, and to lay him to rest beside his mother, father, and his sister—my mother.

Gary, I will never forget you. We grew up together and everyone in our family remembers you with love.
