He was born on June 9, 1927, the son of the late Frank J. and Mary J. (Lady) Meyer. He married Mary “Jody” Droege on June 24, 1962 in Kansas and she survives.
George served in the U.S. Army. As a young man, he worked as a mechanic. He loved to play baseball and basketball. He taught and coached basketball in the Chatham School District Jr HIgh for many years, retiring in 1985. He served as a Lay Pastor for several years, filling in at several churches waiting for new pastors or vacationing pastors. He was very involved in mission work, especially after retirement. He attended the American Baptist church, Cherry Hills in Springfield, and was very involved in organizing groups to do various work projects for smaller churches and he was always available to help people in need of home or car repairs; He worked with missionaries in Costa Rica and Juarez, Mexico with a group from Cherry Hills that support a church there. He had a great sense of humor and he loved the St Louis Cardinals, collage basketball (Illini, as a grad from University of Illinois at Springfield), pro football, and John Wayne movies.
Besides his wife Mary “Jody”, he is survived by 2 sons Tim (wife Helene) Meyer of New Berlin, IL, and David (wife Trish) Meyer of Plymouth, MI; 3 grandchildren, Gabe, Jonas, and Alexandria Meyer; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Jess and a sister Ila.
Services are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, Springfield. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10 A.M. until time of the funeral service at 11 A.M. at Cherry Hills Church, 2125 Woodside Rd., Springfield. Private Internment will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield.
Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, St. John’s Breadline, or the Washington Street Mission.
