George Lawrence Sweat

George was born on October 3, 1938, in Keokuk, IA, the son of George E. and Madelene Lydia (Knies) Sweat. He married Rosa Claire Thompson on February 1, 1958, in East Moline, IL. Rosa preceded him in death on March 29, 2011.

George spent his career working in various law enforcement positions and agencies. He retired as a Captain from the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation. George attended Southside Christian Church. He enjoyed genealogy and was a motorcycle enthusiast, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

George was also preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Aten W. and Jeanette (Mathias) Thompson; and brother-in-law, Aten “Tom” W. Thompson, Jr.

He is survived by his son, Lawrence A. (wife, Laura) Sweat of Springfield; daughter, Lisa A. (husband, Greg) Thoele of Springfield; grandchildren, Larresa Kleinertz of Springfield, Jessica Wittland (husband, Craig Olson) of Chatham, Jason D. Sweat of Springfield, and Kristen (husband, Michael) Wester of Chicago; great-grandchildren, Bella and Gabby Kleinertz of Springfield and Claire and Miles Wittland of Chatham; step-grandchildren, Nicholas (wife, Ashleigh) Thoele of Auburn, Lauren Thoele of Chatham, Anna Thoele of Chatham, and Matthew Thoele of Springfield; brother, Herbert (wife, Barb) Sweat of Colorado Springs, CO; sister, Ellen Béland of Springfield; sisters-in-law, Sherri Thompson of Silvis, IL, Theresa (husband, Larry) Foltz of Katy, TX, and Cinda (husband, George) Waller of Olympia, WA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.

Private family ceremonies were held.
