

Gus was born September 9, 1935, in Springfield, IL, the son of Gustav J. and Josephine Nims Bretscher. He married Eva Marie Cook on June 28, 1957; she preceded him in death in 2010. He was also preceded in death by his parents and sister, Josephine Bretscher.
Gus proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked as a union painter and then security for the State of Illinois Lottery until his retirement. Gus enjoyed fishing, woodworking, cooking, riding his Goldwing, and traveling with his wife, Eve. He was a member of the Goldwing Riders Association and the Lake Sangchris Bass Club and was a past commander of AMVETS Post #61.
Gus is survived by his son, Michael (wife, Luz) Bretscher of Chatham; daughter, Carla (husband, Brian) Goebel of Girard; five grandchildren, Victoria (fiancé, Schyler Thompson) Bretscher, Michael (wife, Kristen) Bretscher, Chris (wife, Cristen) Moore, Travis Moore, and Alex (girlfriend, Bella Stoneking) Moore; and five great-grandchildren, Everly Rose Bretscher, Addison Nicole Bretscher, and Samantha, Chris, Jr., and Sawyer Moore.
Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Butler Funeral Home-Chatham, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, IL. A funeral ceremony will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Martin Kaufmann officiating.
Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
