

Herschel Lee Cass Jr., 80, of Sherman, passed away at his home on Monday, January 9, 2012 with his family at his side.
He was born in Buffalo Hart, IL June 18, 1931 the son of Herschel Lee and Eleanor Russell Cass Sr. He married Wilma Pierce August 26, 1966 and she survives.
He is also survived by his daughter; Barbara (husband Charles) Rogers of Sherman, 4 sons; Paul (wife Mary) Cass, Mark (wife Aimee) Cass, Herschel Lee “Lee” Cass III, and James “Jim” (wife Rhondalea) Cass all of Springfield, 18 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 3 sisters; Barb (husband Keith) Sage of Tallula, IL., Donna (husband Jim) Wolford and Betty Brown, both of Springfield, 3 brothers; John (wife Barb) Cass of Hillsboro, IL, Jim (wife Marcia) Cass and Jack (Toni) Cass both of Springfield. There are several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Herschel was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Bill and Donald Cass.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He achieved the rank of Corporal and earned several medals including the Korean Service Medal, Occupation Medal (Japan) and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
He was a member of the Williamsville Christian Church, was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, enjoyed gardening, and could fix anything. He retired in 2005 from Lincoln Land Community College where he worked in maintenance. He was a member of the VFW.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. where visitation will be on Monday, January 16, 2012 from 3-6 pm and where funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday January 17, 2012 with Pastor David Beals officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery. Full military honors conducted by the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the United States Army.
