

Jim was born on July 21, 1941, the son of Frances Dowson Atherton and Albert Atherton.
Jim was a public-school teacher in the Chicago area for many years. He was also a registered Coast Guard Captain, piloting small and larger boats and delivering new gambling riverboats to their destinations.
Jim returned to Springfield after retirement, where he enjoyed working on a dairy farm and hauling fuel during spring planting and fall harvest. He enjoyed family immensely and looked forward to holiday dinners, making three or four stops and delivering his well-known deviled eggs and peanut brittle. Jim loved Lake Springfield, piloting his classic wooden boat and jet skiing. He also loved riding his well-lit Honda Gold Wing.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by numerous cousins and will be greatly missed by close family and friends, along with his beloved cats.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
