Springfield- James Tipton Langston was born March 18, 1956 and died on October 22, 2012 at the age of 56. His parents were James Harold (d. 1979) and Mildred Garst Langston (d. 1982) who loved, cherished, and cared for their special son, “Jim”. His only sibling, and sister, Constant “Connie” Langston Swikle survives him, as well as a brother-in-law, Gary C. Swikle, and nephews, Wade Langston Swikle and Brett Charles Swikle.
Knowing Jim Langston was like watching the sunlight burst through a room, scattering light droplets throughout the space. The warmth in his eyes was always angelic. When out shopping, he would walk up to any stranger, and even tough, burly types would soften when Jim stuck out his hand for a handshake, saying, “Hi, I’m Jim!” Jim was always reminding people subtly, that compassion and reaching out to others are out best human traits.
Growing up at home, he enjoyed music, dancing, large extended family celebrations, super heroes, and holidays. When his sister went away to college, he went away “to school” also, and began residing at Brother James Court, an outstanding facility in Springfield, IL that specializes in residential care for men with disabilities. It has been his home for 36 years.
Jim frequently vacationed with Connie and her family throughout the years, both in Florida and Illinois, so his nephews knew “Uncle Jim” and his great sense of humor—his Jack Benny impressions and innate photography skills were amazing. His life was enriched from the love of all of Gary’s family and grandchildren at holiday celebrations, as well as Connie’s many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and the staff at Brother James Court.
Special thanks go to the staff at Brother James Court for the devotion, love, and care demonstrated daily throughout the years, and most especially during his recent illness. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that any memorials be sent to Brother James Court to help them carry on their inspirational work and to continue to cherish the many individuals entrusted to their unwavering care.
Family and friends will be processing from Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel at 10:30 am to Indian Point Cemetery for a graveside service at 11:00 am, Friday, Oct. 26, 2012. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held Friday at 1:15 pm at Brother James Court.
Memorials may be made to Brother James Court, 2508 St. James Rd., Springfield,IL 62707.
