John was born on July 10, 1953, the son of Conrad J. and Mary I. (Fitzgibbon) Pohl.
He graduated from Griffin High School as a member of the Class of 1972 and later earned an associate’s degree from Springfield College in Illinois. He had his first job as a teenager at Howard’s Grocery. He loved being in the store, talking with customers and this started his 40+ year career in retail.
John had numerous hobbies. He was an avid reader, especially books on Abraham Lincoln and U.S. history. He volunteered at the Lincoln Home Historic Site. John took up photography in his teens and served as the ‘family photographer’ at celebrations. He was fascinated with genealogy, tracing the family tree and creating volumes of our family’s history. John had a green thumb and a love of planting and propagating flowers. With each spring his garden expanded with a new bed of color. John loved baseball and was a diehard St. Louis Cardinals fan. On a local level John attended every Springfield Sliders/Lucky Horseshoes game. He was acknowledged by the team for his loyalty by having a seat reserved for him at the ballpark, complete with a personalized plaque.
He was a man of faith and family. Attending Mass at St. Agnes was a high priority. Despite physical challenges, he rarely missed going to church. John treasured time spent with his family. He was cherished by his numerous nieces and nephews. He did not turn down any invitations to attend weddings, celebrate birthdays, baptisms, etc. and most importantly to him, join in holiday festivities.
