

Joseph was born September 13, 1940, in Springfield, the son of Joseph John II and Mary Elizabeth Callans Fortune.
He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1958 and attended Illinois State University. Joseph proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard and was employed as an IT Specialist for the State of Illinois until his retirement in 2001 after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Joseph loved music and enjoyed playing the pedal steel guitar. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Michael and William Fortune.
He is survived by his son, Mike (wife, Cortney) Fortune of Sherman; grandchildren, Ava and Aiden Fortune; sister, Mary Pat (Joe) Klickna of CO; niece, Leighann McBride; and three nephews, Kris and Joe Klickna and Stephen McBride.
Funeral Mass: 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 524 E. Lawrence Ave., Springfield, IL with The Very Rev. Brian C. Alford, celebrant. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center following ceremonies.
Private family burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park.
