He was born in Springfield on November 29, 1936, the son of Alby and Vera Stasukinas. Jerry married Frances Marie Stasukinas in Springfield on May 18, 1957.
Jerry went to St. Peter and Paul Grade School and later attended St. James Trade School. He inherited his entrepreneurial spirit from his first generation Lithuanian immigrant parents, who owned and operated Alby’s Tavern. At a young age, Jerry learned the plumbing business and used that knowledge to start Springfield Plumbing & Heating in 1962, with the help of his devoted wife, Frances. The business later evolved into Springfield Mechanical Corporation in 1969, which is still in operation today. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Local #137, Illinois Plumbing Association, Lithuanian- American Club of Central Illinois, and a faithful member of St. Cabrini Parish.
He was the world’s best grandpa and most enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. Jerry loved to travel, especially to South Padre Island, wintering with Franny. Among his other hobbies were the occasional gambling trip, boating, developing new and exciting business opportunities, hosting friends, and retelling his family’s history from Lithuania to Springfield.
Jerry was a legend among those who knew him with a bigger than life personality. He was a lengthy storyteller, devoted family man, a mentor to many his whole life, and his legacy will not soon be forgotten.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances; sons, Jerry Jr. and Andrew Stasukinas; and great-grandson, Andrew Smith.
Jerry is survived by his daughter, Sherrie Smith of Springfield; grandchildren, Justin (Crystal) Smith of Lake St. Louis, MO, Katie (Sam) Andel of Springfield, and Brittany Smith of Edwardsville; brother, John Stasukinas; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Bennett Smith; niece, Vanessa Hebda; and many extended family members.
