

Kay Wallwork, 79, of Springfield, died at 2:47 p.m. on Friday, October 19, 2018, at Memorial Medical Center. Kay was born on April 21, 1939, in Springfield, the daughter of Joseph J. and Charlotte B. Mayberry McDevitt. She married James Wallwork on September 7, 1991, in Springfield. Kay graduated from Springfield High School in 1957 and was employed as a legal secretary for many years before working for the State of Illinois Commerce of Community Affairs where she remained until her retirement. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, decorating, entertaining, camping, and hiking. She was an avid reader, and loved traveling the countryboasting that she had visited every state in the U.S. (with the expectation of Alaska, which was still on her list of places to see). Kays proudest accomplishment was being a phenomenal grandmother. She and Jim win the gold star for supportive grandparents having attended countless sporting events, recitals, plays, concerts, birthday parties and graduations over the years. She enjoyed cruising around town in her blue convertible Bug, easily identifiable by the distinctive license plate "Mami Sue" honoring a nickname the grandchildren had bestowed upon her. Kay was sassy, funny, fiercely loyal and possessed a quit wit. She loved her dog, Murphy, who was her cherished companion. She valued family and friendships above all else. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald McDevitt. She is survived by her husband, Jim Wallwork of Springfield; her children, Steve (wife, Wendi) DeMarco of Springfield, Jeff DeMarco (Cathy Rademacher) of St. Louis, MO, Deann (husband, Steve) French of Springfield, and Tom DeMarco (Tami Ireland , children Zayne and Jaiana) of Springfield; step-children, Peter (Jeanne) Wallwork of Loxahatchee, FL, Elizabeth (husband, Mike) Short of Cornelius, NC and Charis (husband, Bruce) Painter of Clayton, NC; grandchildren, Nick DeMarco, Jenni DeMarco, Derek French, Kyle French, Missy DeMarco, Jeremy French, Will DeMarco, and Zander DeMarco; step-grandchildren, Jimmy Wallwork, Tyler Wallwork, Nick Short, Katherine Short, Kyle Painter, and Kaitlyn Painter; great-grandchild, Carter Griffin; and step-great-grandchildren, Violet, Lilly, and Nick Wallwork. Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at Christ Church, 611 E. Jackson St., Springfield. A funeral ceremony will follow at 12:00 p.m. with The Rev. Dr. Gregory A. Tournoux officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
