

Lela L. Chunes, 92, of Springfield, died at 11:20 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2009 at Memorial Medical Center. Lela was born September 21, 1917 in Farina, IL, the daughter of Frank and Rosa Ambuehl Woerner. She married Peter J. Chunes. He preceded her in death in 1974. Lela graduated from Farina High School in 1935 and had lived in Springfield since 1937. She was employed by Illinois Bell, the State of Illinois and Fiat Allis as a telephone operator and receptionist for several years. Lela was a very active, independent minded and loving woman whose greatest joy was being with her family and having fun. She enjoyed playing bridge, golfing and bowling and had won awards for all of them. She also liked to read, watch game shows, do crossword puzzles and tell stories about growing up in Farina. She was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Irma Jean Kulavic, Frances Hebron, Helen Dale and Charlotte Cokinos; two brothers, Earl and James R. Woerner; and a daughter-in-law, Marlene Chunes. She is survived by a son, Anthony G. Chunes of Springfield; a daughter, Suellen (husband, Michael) Moser of Springfield; six grandchildren, Mary "Shelly" (husband, Kevin) Lutes, Amy and Tisha Moser and Brett, Jeffrey and Gregory Chunes; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 1020 N. Milton Ave., Springfield. Funeral Mass will follow visitation at 11:45 a.m. with Rev. Msgr. John R. Ossola, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
