

Leonard E. Ferguson, Sr., 81, of Springfield, died at 12:10 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at St. John's Hospice. Leonard was born March 26, 1930 in Springfield, the son of George H. and Virginia A. Sturman Ferguson. He married Dorothy Wrincik on August 27, 1955 in Springfield. Leonard graduated from St. Agnes School in 1943, Immaculate Conception (McCooey) Catholic High School of Hannibal, MO in 1947, and earned his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, where he served as an instructor in the 1st Armor Division at Fort Knox. He was employed with Sangamo Electric for 23 years and then for the IL Commerce Commission as an engineer for 14 years. Leonard was a member of Christ the King Parish and also attended St. Agnes Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Maj. Howard G. Ferguson, Jr. (USMC Ret.). He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy; children, Ann M. (Richard) Ramsey of Rochester, Leonard E. (Debbie) Ferguson II of Springfield, Jean M. (Mike) Murphy of Springfield, David L. (Traci) Ferguson of Laguna Beach, CA, Jo M. (David) Hendrickson of Rochester, and Gail M. (Anthony) Ruggiero of San Juan Capistrano, CA; and ten grandchildren. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday February 23, 2012 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Memorial Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 24, 2012 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Rev. Gerald Zienaa officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
