

George was born on September 21, 1928 in Springfield, the son of Earl and Mabel Bell Shaffer. He married Ruth McKane on November 27, 1954 in Springfield.
George was a 1946 graduate of Feitshans High School. He was a combat veteran of the Korean War, serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1950 - 1952. Following his service, he went on to work at Sangamo Electric for many years and retired from the Dickey-John Corporation in 1992. George was a member and served as an Elder in the Community of Christ Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Shaffer; his parents; and two sisters, Marjorie Gillman and Myrtle Markey.
He is survived by three sons, M. George Shaffer, Jr., Daniel E. Shaffer, and Mark W. (Caroline) Shaffer; one daughter, Lori (Robert) Piepergerdes; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Robson; and many nieces and nephews.
Due to COVID restrictions, a private family ceremony will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Family and friends may view the Private Graveside via livestream at: https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/26037304
