

Janet “Marcia” Jones Currie 71, of Chatham, Illinois passed away September 24, 2008, at her family homestead, Balgillo Farm in Chatham. Balgillo Farm has been in her family since it was established in 1827. Marcia was born November 17, 1936, in Springfield, Illinois. She is the daughter of Dr. Alexander J. Jones III and Helen Saunders Jones. She married Robert A. Currie of Galashiels, Scotland, on February 12, 1966, in Waukegan, Illinois. Her husband preceded her in death on September 17, 1992.
Marcia graduated from Springfield High School in 1954, she attended Sweet Briar College in Lynchburg, Virginia, as a music major studying piano and violin. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri, in 1958 and also served on the board of trustees for Lindenwood College. Following her studies at Lindenwood College she received her Masters Degree of Social Work from the University of Missouri in Columbia. Marcia also attended The Sorbonne in Paris and studied and worked with Dr. Maxwell Jones in Galashiels, Scotland, at Dingleton Hospital.
Marcia retired from St. John’s Home Health in 2001 after thirteen years as a psychiatric social worker. She also enjoyed working for Pana Home Health and caring for her many patients through home visits. Marcia also owned and operated Sugar Creek Stables which she founded in 1979. She also helped her husband Robert with his companies over the years.
Marcia was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield. She was a founding member of Chatham’s Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. Marcia also was a member of the Junior League of Springfield, Progress Circle of The King’s Daughters Organization and La Leche League.
Marcia always enjoyed life having a wonderful sense of humor and a beautiful smile which all of us will remember. She always made sure others were taken care of. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandsons and granddog, Ferocious. She was an avid tennis player. She had a passion for music and enjoyed playing the piano, especially playing duets with her husband, Robert. She loved Jazz and attending jazz performances at Gas Light Square in St. Louis. One of her early adventures in life was learning to fly an airplane. She also loved to travel, having visited many parts of the world including several visits to Europe. Marcia also enjoyed her work with genealogy as she researched her family history here and in the United Kingdom and France.
Marcia is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (husband Mike) Lovegrove of Chatham; her son Christopher (fiancée Erin Murphy) of Algonquin, Illinois; her son Andrew, of Chatham and two grand-sons, Robert and Adam Lovegrove. Marcia is also survived by her sister, Judith Jones Inslee and her brother, Alexander J. Jones IV (wife Lin), both of Chatham.
Other survivors include step-daughter Gillian Toosey (husband Richard) of Buckinghamshire, England; step-grandsons David and Peter Currie of Galashiels, Scotland; Giles and William Toosey of Buckinghamshire, England in addition to nieces Janet Inslee Roustio of Edwardsville, Illinois and Violet Jones of Springfield, Illinois; nephews David Inslee (wife Dena) of Chatham; Phillip Inslee (wife Susan) of Lafayette, Colorado; Alexander J. Jones V (wife Kelly) of Springfield; Jonathan Jones, Joseph Jones (wife Jacquelin) of Springfield; great-nieces and nephews Amanda Roustio of Edwardsville and Erica, Justin, Nicholas, and Sophia Inslee of Lafayette and Delanie Jones of Springfield.
Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert, her niece Jennifer Jones of Springfield, Illinois, and her step-son Robert W. Currie of Galashiels, Scotland.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. John’s Home Health & Hospice Services, Sugar Creek Cemetery in Chatham, Illinois (c/o U.S. Bank, Acct. ending in 0397, 2501 South Veterans Parkway, Springfield, Illinois 62704), the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 1: 30 p.m. at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel in Springfield. Burial will immediately follow at Sugar Creek Cemetery in Chatham. Rev. Dr. Gregory A. Tournoux will be officiating.
