

Mary Helen Nickel, 94, of Springfield, died at 5:20 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center. Mary Helen was born on October 12, 1920 in Virden, the daughter of George C. and Fannie Mae Odell Adcock. She married Fred D. Nickel, Sr. on October 11, 1939. He preceded her in death in November 1994. Mary Helen retired from the State of Illinois in 1989. She also owned and operated Mary's Beef House. Mary enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of the Elm Street Christian Church. . Mary was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and one sister. She is survived by two sons, Fred Jr., "Dallas" (wife, Donna) of Greenville and William "Darell" (wife, Becky) of Edinburg; two daughters: Mary Alice (husband, Bill) Phillips of Springfield and Ada Marie (husband, Pat) Lavin of Broken Arrow, OK: ten grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home with Minister Seth Schnautz officiating. Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Virden Cemetery.
