

Maxine was born February 20, 1925, in Sorento, Illinois, to Seth and Edna (Taylor) Young. She grew up in Sorento and Wood River, Illinois. Maxine graduated from Alton High School in 1943. She attended Greenville College (now Greenville University) in Greenville, Illinois, graduating with a degree in education in 1947. Maxine taught music and English in Witt and St. Joseph.
On June 14, 1946, she married Jacob O. Whitlock. They settled in Springfield, Illinois. Together they had two sons, Mark and David. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marjorie Young Brown; her husband, Jacob; and a grandson, Douglas Whitlock.
Maxine was an active member of Knox Knolls Free Methodist Church for seventy years, serving on various boards and committees. She taught Sunday School for many years. Maxine also served on the building committee and was largely responsible for the interior design of the current church sanctuary.
She was a member of the Willing Circle of King’s Daughters, Illini Country Club, Morning Etude, the Community Concert Board, and was a founding member of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers Auxiliary. Maxine was an avid golfer and bowler. She was an active supporter of Free Methodist Missions, Durley Camp, and Greenville University.
Maxine loved traveling. In addition to traveling all over the United States, she also traveled to all the continents except Antarctica. Maxine continued to travel well into her 90s. She was known by all for her outgoing personality and her positive, can-do attitude.
Maxine is survived by two sons, Mark (Karen) and David (Martha); three grandchildren, Aaron (Julie), Geoffrey (Jennifer), and Emily; and four great-grandchildren, Paige, Landon, Annelise, and Leanora. In addition, she is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Knox Knolls Free Methodist Church, Springfield, on Thursday February 8th at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral following at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Tyler Boyer will officiate. Interment will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Coffeen, at 2:00 p.m.
