He was born on November 13, 1946, in Springfield, IL, the son of Melvin, Sr. and Garnet (Hulbert) Thomas.
Melvin attended Springfield High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Melvin was a former welder in California and later worked landscaping with Spencer’s Nursery. He was a member of DAV and American Legion. Melvin was rewarded for his poems on the Veterans Voice. He enjoyed playing guitar, singing, joking with people, and had an eye for art – particularly ceramics.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Patricia Thomas, Alberta Thomas, Judy Parton Blandford and brother, Otha Parton.
Melvin is survived by his sisters, Linda (Sam) Risley of Buffalo and Deborah Rene Ann Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at the Danville VA hospital, for their care of Melvin.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.
Funeral Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, with Rev. David Gessaman officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield with Military Honors.
