He was born on August 27, 1955, in Springfield, IL, the son of Leonard A. and Mary Ann (Pierce) Maurer.
Michael worked at and retired from the post office in Chatham. He enjoyed playing basketball, spending time with friends, and talking with people.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Judith Calvert, Judith Buckman, and Mary Margaret Howell; brothers, Leonard A. Maurer, Jr. and Jonathon Butchek; sister, Kathleen McCann; and son, Adam Cripe.
Michael is survived by his son, Michael Smith of Springfield; grandchild, Landon Smith; and cousin, Jay Withey.
Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield, followed by the ceremony at 11:00 a.m. with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
