

He was born on December 12, 1965, in Springfield, IL, the son of James A. Mayfield, Sr. and Martha (Gerding) Mayfield.
Michael proudly served his country in the Illinois Air National Guard where he began his 20-year career as a firefighter with the 183rd Fighter Wing. If you knew Mike as “Smoothy”, you were a friend. He was never at a loss for words, and he found it hard to deny a friend a favor. His nieces and nephews continue to use his unique phrases as a reminder of his sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his father, James A. Mayfield, Sr.
Michael is survived by his mother, Martha Mayfield; siblings, James A. (Beth) Mayfield, Jr. Mary (David) Dellert, John (Keri) Mayfield, Michelle (Tim) Sorenson, Anthony (Shelley) Mayfield, and Matthew (Addie) Mayfield; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center, prior to services.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1345 N. 6th St., Springfield, with Rev. Manuel P. Cuizon, Ph.D., celebrant.
Private burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
