

Michael “Mike” A. Martin, 82, of Springfield, died at 7:08 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2005 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. Michael was born December 3, 1922 in Springfield, the son of Michael A. and Anna Leutenmeyer Martin. He married Mabel B. Malone on November 11, 1961 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Michael was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church. He was also a past member of American Legion Post 32 and Knights of Columbus Council 364. He was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran serving in the Navy Medical Corp-Acorn 8 from June 17, 1941 – June 15, 1947 where he was awarded the American Theater, WWII Victory Medal, American Defense and Asiatic-Pacific (1 star) during his service in WWII. He retired in 1984 from the Illinois Department of Transportation where he had been employed as an accounting technician for twenty-five years. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: George W., Paul W., James I., Charles A. and Patrick Martin and one sister: Pauline Browder. He is survived by his wife: Mabel Martin of Springfield; one son: Mark A. (wife, Pattie) Martin of Franklin, TN; one grandson: Barrett Grayson Martin of Franklin, TN; two sister-in-laws, several nieces, nephews and three cousins. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 23, 2005 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2125 N. 21st. St. Springfield with Rev. Donald Meehling, celebrant. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
