

She was born September 7, 1921 in Stigler, OK, the daughter of E.J. and Mae Brown Bates.
Mrs. Shultz grew up in Oklahoma where she graduated from Connors State College with an associate degree and Oklahoma City University with a Bachelor Degree in Business in 1942. She married Robert M. Shultz on Aug. 21, 1946 at Wesley Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, where she and her husband were active in the Builders Sunday School class. She was a teacher in Oklahoma for several years until they started a family. In 1962 she moved to Springfield with her family where she worked as secretary for Laurel United Methodist Church from 1970 until she retired in 1983.
She was a longtime member of Laurel United Methodist Church where she active in United Methodist Women, the Pacesetters Sunday School class, and Chancel Choir.
Mrs. Shultz enjoyed sewing and playing the piano. She was an avid reader and especially loved to travel and visit with friend and family.
In addition to her husband, Bob she is survived by three children, Robert K. Shultz of Westminster, CO, the Rev. Mary Louise (the Rev. Stanley J.) Haxton of LeRoy, IL, and John (Cheryl) Shultz of Harrisburg, IL; grandchildren, Elizabeth Shultz Locker (Eric), Amanda Shultz (Dan), Sarah Shultz, James Atkinson, Simon Haxton, Jessica Haxton Retrum (Iver), Nick Haxton (Elaina Moore), Kathryn Shultz, and James Cirigliano (Susan); a brother, Gene C. Bates of Tulsa, OK; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leon Bates and two sisters, Louise Willins and Jeanne Loftin.
Visitation will be held Tues. Dec. 6, 2011 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel and Wed. Dec. 7th at Laurel United Methodist Church from 9:30 AM until the funeral service at 10:30 AM. The Rev. Jerry King will be officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
