Norma Jean Capranica

Norma J. Capranica, 89, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at home with her family by her side. She was born on July 7, 1936, in Springfield, Illinois, to Frank and Gussie (Henson) Simpson.

Norma married the love of her life, Pasquale “Pat” Capranica, in June of 1967. Their marriage was built on devotion, partnership, and deep love for family. Pat preceded her in death, in 2019.

She was a graduate of New Berlin High School, where she was forever proud to be a Pretzel. She continued her education at Brown’s Business School. Norma built a strong and respected career as a bookkeeper for several local businesses. She later served as manager of Pope John Paul Apartments for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield, where she worked faithfully for several years until her retirement.

Norma was a proud member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #4175 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Bears. Norma loved spending time outdoors, especially planting flowers and enjoying the sunshine.

Her greatest love was her family. Norma cherished time spent gathered around the dinner table, especially while serving pasta with her homemade sauce, and she found immense joy cheering on her grandchildren at their sporting events.

Norma is survived by her daughter, Kim (Jim); son, Pat (Amy); and daughter, Gina (Travis); grandchildren, Colin May, Gina Steele, Nick Capranica, Emily Ozella, Carli Hemphill, and Travis Hemphill; and five beloved great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home - Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2000 E. Sangamon Ave., Springfield, with Rev. George Nellikunnel, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
