

Patty was born to the late William T. and Bess L. Flynn on May 1, 1935, in Jacksonville, Illinois. She was the second child of five and grew up in Winchester, Il. on her Family’s farm. Patty graduated from Winchester High School in 1953 and shortly thereafter moved to Springfield, IL. She spent the entirety of her 42-year career as a Legal Secretary at Livingstone Adjustment Service and the law firm of Livingstone, Mueller, O'Brien, and Davlin P.C., ultimately retiring in 1999.
Patty married Walter A. Hanken on May 5, 1962; he preceded her in death in 1997.
Patty was also preceded in death by her brother, Thomas W. Flynn; nephews, Brad Dodge and Patrick Flynn Elchlepp; and grandson, Walter Flynn Hanken.
She is survived by her two sons, W. Scott (wife, Ruth) Hanken and Christopher T. (wife, Kathy) Hanken both of Springfield. Patty continually and lovingly referred to them as her “little” boys. She is also survived by grandsons, Walter Willett “Will” Hanken, and Matthew R. (wife, Rachael) Bentley and granddaughters, Rori Flynn Hanken and Carsyn Kristine Hanken; her three sisters with whom she was inseparable her entire life, Joan (husband, Walt) Hodde, Marjorie Flynn and Judy Flynn, all of Springfield; nieces, Holly Flynn Grady and Kelly Flynn (husband, Andrew) Scott; and nephew, Craig Dodge.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church as well as the Altar Rosary Society. Patty was an active member in both school and community endeavors and served as a Boy Scout Den Mother and President of the Hay- Edwards PTA. Upon her retirement, she remained extremely active and devoted herself to volunteer service. Patty was a member of King’s Daughters, Progress Circle, and Board Member and Secretary for HSHS St. John’s Samaritans. She participated in Meals on Wheels and volunteered for years in the Gift Shop of the Carol Jo Vecchie Women and Children’s Center. In addition to her volunteer activities, Patty enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, bridge, and reading.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 20201 at Blessed Sacrament Church,1725 South Walnut St., Springfield, IL 62704 with Rev. Jeff Grant, celebrant. Due to COVID restrictions there will be limited capacity.
A private family burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
