Peter W. McCue, Jr.

Peter W. “Pete” McCue, Jr., 88, of Sherman, died at 2:35 p.m. Thursday, April 08, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center. Peter was born November 5, 1915 in Springfield the son of Peter W.Sr. and Mary Brown McCue. He married Margaret Knox January 19, 1938 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Springfield; she preceded him in death March 6, 2003. Pete was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Springfield, and at the age of 73, continued his education to receive his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Mr. McCue was employed by the Internal Revenue Service, and later became President and an insurance executive for Bernard Investment Company. He retired from the State of Illinois and was actively involved in farm management following his retirement. He was an avid golfer, winning numerous amateur championships. He served as Chairman of the Illini Country Club Golf Committee, and was instrumental in their course design. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #4179 and was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus- Bishop Griffin Assembly, a member of the Sangamo Club for over forty years, former member of the Old Sherman Republican Club and was actively involved with the Illinois Republican Party. He was a founding member and Charter President of the Springfield Sertoma Club. He also was Governor of the Southern Illinois District of Sertoma International. He was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church where he was involved with numerous committees. He was also preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter: Elizabeth, and two brothers: Edward and James. He is survived by his three children: Peter W. McCue, III of Buffalo; Margaret Mary “Mopsy” (husband, Richard) Turasky of Huntley, Sally (husband, Perry) Grieme of Sherman; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren, two sisters: Rita (husband, Robert) Layendecker and Helen Szerletich both of Springfield and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 902 St. John’s Drive, Sherman. Funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at St. John Vianney with Rev. Msgr. Eugene E. Costa celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
