

Ray was born April 14, 1922 in Buffalo Hart, the son of Ray A and Lucy Letterest Max. He married Carmen Cravens, April 21, 1944 and she preceded him in death in March 1997. Ray later married Ruby Savage on January 13, 1999. His parents, 3 sisters; Mae Castleman, Lorene Garner and Rebecca Wilson, and 3 brothers; Leroy Max, Wilbur Max, and Rev. Homer Max also preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby of Riverton, 2 daughters; Diana (Don ) Jarrett of Springfield, and Donna (David) Bryant of Allardt TN., 3 grandchildren; Richard (Lori) Jarrett of Dawson, Lynn (Steve) Faichney of Manito, and Jason (Mary Lou) Jarrett of Mechanicsburg, Great grandchildren; Lexie and Katie Jo Jarrett, Ashlei Fiorentino, Dakota and Paeden Ascherl, Tristan Faichney, 1 Great Great Granddaughter; Alleia Fiorentino, 1 sisters; Fran Williamson of Springfield, and many nieces and nephews, 3 Step-Children; Sherrill (Doug) Weddersten, Raymond Schofield, Sr., Alissa (Emanuel) Stamper, 9 step-grandchildren, and 1 step great grandson.
Ray was a grain and dairy farmer for 52 years, and also owned and operated Max Trucking Co for 20 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S.A.A.F., serving from June 1942 –December 1945. He was part of a task forced used to form the 29th Air Service Squad-“13 Air Force” picked by General MacArthur from Marine, Navy, Army, and the See Bees to take back the Pacific Ocean on the way to Japan.
He was a life member of the VFW Post 10302 in Springfield, and a charter member of the WWII War Memorial at Washington, D.C. He was an avid supporter of the St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, S.D. for 40 years.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home 505 E. Allen where visitation will be from 4-7 PM Tuesday February 1, 2011 and where funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 10:00 am with Rev. Vaughn Beeman officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense will provide military honors.
