

Rita D. Layendecker, 87, of Springfield, passed away at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at Chippewa Shores Resort. Rita was born September 3, 1923 in Springfield, the daughter of Peter W. and Mary C. Brown McCue. She married Robert "Bob" Layendecker on October 16, 1943 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception; he preceded her in death on December 7, 2005. Rita was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and was a homemaker, raising six children. She was a member of Church of the Little Flower and enjoyed spending time with her family. Rita liked fishing, jet skiing, boating and baking. She was known for her bread baking and gooey butter coffee cake. Rita loved spending time at the family cabin in Wisconsin. She was also preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Denise Blazis-Mataya; three brothers, Edward, Peter and James; and a son-in-law, Ken Costa. She is survived by her children, Linda (Mike) Knox of Springfield, Suzanne Horn of Springfield, Ginny Costa of Petersburg, Trish (Mark) Andracke of Springfield, Bob (Pam) Layendecker of Springfield and Bill (Mary) Layendecker of Champaign; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, plus one on the way; eight step-great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Szerletich of Springfield; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and several in-laws. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Church of the Little Flower, 800 Stevenson Dr., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Church of the Little Flower, with Rev. Msgr. John R. Ossola celebrant.
