He was born at the family home in Warrick County, Indiana near Boonville, October 3, 1923, the son of William B. and Della Mae (Byers) Richardson. Robert attended Illinois State University for 1 year before entering active service with the United States Navy March 23, 1943, and earned his honorable discharge, December 24, 1945. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Victory Medal with 1 star and the Navy Air Medal for meritorious achievement at Okinawa.
Robert married Harriett Pfirman in Quincy, IL June 16, 1951, and she preceded him in death June 13, 2021. He was also preceded in death by his parents, three sisters; Nora Enlow, Mary Gochanour and Emma Beams and two brothers; William S. Richardson and Clarence D. Richardson.
Robert retired from Illinois Bell Telephone Company after 36 years where he served as a cable splicer and an engineer. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Elks Club. He was an 85-year member of the Elliot Avenue Baptist Church and then later the Jerome United Methodist Church. Robert was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, St. John’s Breadline and delivered Meals on Wheels with his wife for many years. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan and also enjoyed watching St. Louis Blues Hockey and Fighting Illini Basketball. His fondest memories were dancing with his wife Harriett, they loved to jitterbug to big band music. He also treasured spending time with his family; they were the love of his life.
Surviving are his two sons: Kent (wife Bobbie) Richardson of Collinsville, IL, and Robert L (wife Rose) Richardson of Springfield. There are three grandchildren; Shane (wife Jamie) Richardson of Peoria, IL, Brian Richardson of Arvada, CO, and Bethany Richardson of Springfield, also four great grandchildren; Sophia, Finley, Molly, and Elias Richardson.
Arrangements are in the care of Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. Springfield, where family and friends are invited for a time of visitation on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Funeral services will follow at 11:15 am with Pastor Donn Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honor’s conducted by the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
