He was born on August 21, 1933, in Springfield, IL, the son of Jesse and Hazel (Bell) Carter.
After graduating from Feitshans High School in Springfield, IL, Ron proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Korea. He earned the rank of sergeant before being honorably discharged in 1955. He joined the Springfield Police Department as a patrol officer, was later promoted to detective, and retired as a Deputy Chief in 1987. After his retirement, Ron and Mary spent several years in Ocala, FL, before returning to Springfield to be closer to family. Ron enjoyed visiting with family and doing word puzzles.
Ron was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 65 years, Mary Jane (Jackson) Carter.
He is survived by his children, Nicholas (Toni) Carter of Collinsville, IL, Valerie Carter of Springfield, IL, and Courtney Carter of St. Louis, MO; four grandchildren, Bridgette (Max) Carter, Callaghan Carter, Erin (Chris) Jurgena, and Haleigh Carter; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Irene Preer of Springfield, IL.
