

He was born on August 20, 1934, in Nortonville, IL, the son of James J. and Beatrice Stouffer Cooper.
Russell graduated from Roodhouse Community High School, where he excelled in several sports, including track, basketball, and football. He then proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for two years and then two years in the Reserves. Russell went on to work as a postal clerk for USPS, for 54 years. He enjoyed building houses; he built or assisted in the building of six houses, in his spare time. Russell also enjoyed square dancing and traveling around the United States.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William G. Cooper; sister, Nelly Cooper-Palmer; and first wife, Annabelle L. Cooper.
Russell is survived by his daughters, Lou Ann Gladson of Fort Knox, KY and Carmen (husband, Mike) Maurer of Chatham, IL; sons, William Cooper of Springfield, IL and Gary Cooper of Rochester, IL; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2022, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL.
Funeral Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 6, 2022, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, with Chaplain Tim Haworth officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense.
