

Ruth Goldman (nee Eckstein) passed away Friday, July 1st, 2016 at Regency Care. Ruth, who was born October 30th, 1922 to Michael and Minnie Eckstein, was an active, lifelong member of the Springfield Community for 93 years. Ruth graduated Springfield High School in 1939 with her future husband Sidney Goldman. Ruth then matriculated in and graduated from both Randolph Macon Women’s College and the University of Wisconsin, becoming a Social Worker. Ruth served as a social worker for the Red Cross in Chicago during World War II. It was there, after the war ended that she was reunited with Sidney Goldman, who was recovering from being wounded in the War at Vaughan General Hospital. They married in 1946 and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Ruth and Sidney raised two sons, Alan and David. Ruth served the Springfield Community in many capacities. She was active as a Board Member for the Boys Club, the Springfield Symphony, Memorial Medical Center, Springfield Red Cross, Temple B'rith
Sholom, Springfield Hadassah, and Temple B'rith Sholom Sisterhood. Ruth was an excellent bridge player and an avid golfer. Ruth could be found on most days working in her garden and tending to the family yard. She and her husband Sidney enjoyed golf every weekend in Jacksonville at the Jacksonville Country Club. Ruth and Sidney were active members of the Sangamo Club. Ruth survived cancer 30 years ago and then established a Cancer Fund through SIU School of Medicine to aid in research. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Michael and Minnie Eckstein, of Springfield, and her sister Gladys Abram of Hollywood, Florida. Ruth is survived by her husband of 70 years, Sidney A. Goldman, her two sons, Alan Goldman (Riv) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and David Goldman (Rhonda) of Jacksonville, Illinois. She is survived by two grandchildren, Michael Goldman (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and Emily Goldman (Washington, DC), and two great-grandchildren Chloe Carnahan and Jacob Carnahan of McLean, Illinois. She is also survived by four nephews, Michael and Stan Abram, Robert and Richard Goldman, and one niece Amy Goldberger. A devoted wife, a loving mother, an active member of the Springfield Community, Ruth leaves a warm and meaningful legacy for all who knew her and who will miss her forever, as she lives on in our hearts with love and cherished memories. A graveside service will be held at 1:30pm on Tuesday July 5, 2016 at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a prayer service 5:30pm Tuesday July 5, 2016 at Temple B’rith Sholom, 1004 South 4th Street.
