Shirley May Grant

Shirley May Grant, 74, of Sherman, passed away at 8:25 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2011 at St. John's Hospital. Shirley was born December 16, 1936 in Ashland, the daughter of John and Zonie Moore DeGroot. She married Robert Grant on March 20, 1982 in Springfield. Shirley had worked at St. John's Hospital and Memorial Medical Center as an LPN nurse and retired from Memorial Medical Center and Kings Daughters Home. She belonged to and was active in the House of Prayer Apostolic Church and was a member of Memorial Medical Center Retirees Club. Shirley was a loving mother and was dedicated to her family. She enjoyed canning vegetables from her garden and loved flea markets, garage sales and arts and crafts. She was preceded in death by her parents; several brothers and sister; and grandson, Joshua Meyer. She is survived by five generations of family, including her husband, Robert F. Grant of Sherman; children, Terry L. (wife, Lori) Smith of Athens, Sharon Meyer of Springfield, Danny R. Smith (companion, Lori Kramer) of Rochester, Michael W. Smith, Sr. (companion, JoAnn) of Springfield and Kevin L. Smith of Springfield; step-sons, Robert F. (wife, Cyndi) Grant II of Athens and Frederick T. Grant of Cantrall; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Louise Bachman of East Peoria; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Pastor G. Leroy Donathan officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
