

Sister Barbara Cox, (69), a Dominican Sister of Springfield for 49 years, died February 19, 2014. She was born to Tom and Marie Struckmeyer Cox in Aurora, IL. As a young Dominican Sister, Sister Barbara taught at these parish schools: Sacred Heart, Granite City; St. Mary, New Berlin and St. Cabrini, Springfield. From 1973 1985, she taught in the parish catechetical programs via the Springfield Diocesan Confraternity Centers in Arcola, Carlinville and Hillsboro. Then in 1987, she co-founded the Benincasa Dominican Renewal Center in Riverton. Throughout her life, Sister Barbara had a love for the arts, especially literature and music, and enjoyed creative writing. She delighted in nature and was known for her tender compassion for animals. Sister Barbara was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother, Marie of Big Rock; her sisters, Margaret Seifrid of Aurora and Pat Malohn of Shabbona; and by her nephews and nieces. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Visitation: A visitation will be held from 3:15-6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Sacred Heart Convent, 1237 W. Monroe St., Springfield. A Vigil Service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Funeral Mass: 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Sacred Heart Convent with Rev. Peter Witchousky OP, presiding. Final Commendation: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund, 1237 W.
