

He was born in Springfield, May 8, 1957, the son of Gerald “Wayne” and Rita (Hogarth) Wood. His parents and a sister, Shelly Bayha preceded him in death.
He was a graduate of Chatham Glenwood High School and was a member of the Future Farmers of America Chapter there.
Steve worked for several years in the HVAC industry, known for his talent with sheet metal. Designing, creating and installing all aspects of the air handling system. Steve retired from the Illinois Secretary of State where he served for several years as a stationary engineer.
In addition to his profession in HVAC, Steve was also an accomplished wood worker. He designed and made furniture, and other items which he shared with family and friends. He loved music and was known for his talent as a guitarist. He was involved with several bands over the years. Steve found an abundance of joy hunting and fishing. One of Steve’s proudest accomplishments was his involvement with the Alano Hall in Springfield. He had a passion for helping and counseling those who struggled and they became extended family. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Ansar Shrine.
Steve is survived by his four daughters: Carrie (Brian) Humes of Springfield, Mindy (Tadd) Davis of Chatham, Jaclyn (Kirk Bryant) Wood of Springfield, and Kayla (Johnathan Jordan) Wood of Springfield. He has five grandchildren: Camoren Wood, Raegan Humes, Lauren Humes, Trenton Davis, and Ja’Myre Jordan. Also surviving are two sisters; Cindy Hopkins and Diana Mohr, both of Springfield, three brothers: Mike (Shelly) Wood of Loami, IL, Darrin (Tonya) Wood of New Berlin, IL, and Curt Wood of Chatham, his companion with whom he made his home, Cheryl Wood. There are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Cremation Rites have been accorded.
A celebration of life will be held at the Chatham American Legion 206 W. Chestnut St. Chatham, IL 62629 Saturday, May 17, 2025, beginning at 11:00 am.
