Thomas "Thom" James Layden, 61, of Troy, IL, died at 10:02 a.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. Thom was born October 17, 1955 in Aurora, IL, the son of Donald S. and Marjorie Dean Layden. He married Jennifer L. Painter on January 13, 1979 in Springfield. Thom graduated from Springfield High School in 1973 and earned his bachelors degree from LaSalle University. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was employed as an Ultrasound Connectivity Leader for General Electric. He was a member of Edwardsville Gun Club, NRA, and the American Legion Post 285. Thom enjoyed shooting, woodworking, bird watching, taking wildlife photos, and most importantly, spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Harold and Gladys Anderson. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Layden of Troy; son, Chris (Brandy) Layden of Collinsville; daughter, Stacy (Joel) Petry of Edwardsville; grandchildren, Morgan, Mackenzie, Melaina, and Carson Petry, all of Edwardsville; siblings, Michael Layden of Springfield, Pamela Pollett of Lincoln, Ellen King of Springfield, and Susan (Steve) Rockow of St. Louis, MO; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense.
