William "Bill" J. McFarland

Bill was born October 21, 1944, in Bloomington, IL, the son of William Lee and Helen Hargis McFarland. He married Karen L. Halberg on June 19, 1982, in Springfield.

Bill graduated from Bloomington High School and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was also proud to have been able to participate in the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight. Bill was employed as a corrections officer for the State of Illinois. He enjoyed fishing in his boat, American history, drawing, and wearing his boots and cowboy hat. Bill also loved animals and watching old western movies.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Cyndi Laesch; and step-brother, Delmar Mallicoat.

Bill is survived by his wife, Karen McFarland of Springfield; children, Lee McFarland of Girard, PA, Heather McFarland of Clarendon, PA, Marla McMeans of Warren, PA, Tamara Statzer of Springfield, Thomas (wife, Jacqueline) Statzer of Sherman, and Angela (husband, Kenneth) Wicks of Riverton; grandchildren, Jennifer (husband, Kile) Lewison, Jacob Shaffer, Ryan (s/o Carmyn Giganti) Wicks, Zachary Statzer, Morgan (husband, Jon) Hanson, Laiken Wicks, Tessa Statzer, Mason Wicks, Gunner (wife, Taylor) Bly, Ranger Bly, Jadin Wicks, Chloe (s/o Jay Myers) Bly, Kendra Knapp, Lisa Knapp, Samantha Knapp, Devon McMeans, Derek McMeans, and Ashlyn McMeans; eighteen great-grandchildren; sister, Joan Menken of Towanda, IL; several nieces and nephew; and beloved dog, Zoey.

Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.

Graveside ceremony: 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 17, 2020, at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense. Illinois COVID-19 guidelines will be followed, requiring face coverings and limiting attendance to 30 people.
