Alice was born in Rock Island, IL to John and Euphamia Milton on March 9, 1929. She attended Gustavus Adolphus College where she met her husband of nearly 65 years, the Reverend Duane Carlson, and obtained a Masters of Social Work from Howard University.
Alice lived a life of service. First and foremost she loved her family. She treasured her Swedish heritage, taking special delight in passing Scandinavian holiday traditions to the next generation. She was an active partner to her husband in the life and ministry of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and in the establishment of the Ecumenical Community Helping Others (ECHO), an organization dedicated to assisting those in need with food, clothing, and financial assistance. And she forged lasting friendships with adoptive parents and children in Fairfax County during a long career as a social worker.
She is survived by three children, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. The family plans to celebrate her life at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday April 17, 2024 at 2:00pm.
Memorials may be given to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 5800 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22150 or ECHO, 7205 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA 22150.
