

Penny grew up in Alexandria and lived in in Annandale, VA after graduating from college. She was predeceased by her parents John and Ann McCallum and her sister Jane McCallum. Penny is the loving wife of Sam Crumpler and caring mother of Laura Crumpler and Christopher Crumpler. She is also survived by her two brothers John R. McCallum and his wife Patricia, Christopher McCallum and his wife Stacy, her son-in-law Jorge Munoz, sister-in-law Sally Crumpler of Norfolk, VA and many nephews and nieces. Penny graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1966, received her BA in English from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1970, and her MS in Library Science from the University of Maryland in 1971. For over 18 years, Penny was the Chief Reference Librarian for the Office Chief of Engineers, Army. She was a dedicated volunteer at Bren Mar Elementary, Columbia Elementary, Poe Middle, and Annandale High Schools. Penny was an avid reader and was always welcomed to attend and join book clubs. She was a pillar In the Hillbrook-Tall Oaks community of Annandale. Penny could always be counted on to help neighbors with projects, pick-up their children at bus stops, pass on information about health and wellbeing of current and former community residents. If you wanted to know which neighbor a dog or cat belonged to, all you had to do was ask Penny. Neighbors will miss her daily walk around the neighborhood.
A funeral mass will be held on May 14, 2015 at 10:00 AM at St. Michael Catholic Church, 7401 St. Michael Lane, Annandale, VA 22003 followed by burial at Ivy Hill Cemetery, 2823 Kings Cloister Cir, Alexandria, VA 22302.
