Carolyn was born to Loyd and Ruby Stiteler on September 9, 1934 in Clifton Forge, VA. When she was a teenager, she met a young man named Bob at a youth activity one Friday evening (in those days everyone called him Bobby). Bob went home and announced to his mother, “Tonight I met the girl I'm going to marry!” As it turned out, he never asked another girl for a date after than night, and made Carolyn his bride in 1953.
After the wedding, the couple made their home in the Washington, D.C. area, where Bob had a long and distinguished career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They raised two sons, Bill and Chris, and the couple were involved in a number of church and civic organizations over the years in the Springfield area.
Carolyn was a believer in Jesus Christ, and was an active member of Immanuel Bible Church of Springfield. She is remembered by staff and members alike for her keen sense of humor, which she regularly employed to keep everyone entertained.
Family members remember her as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a tireless and humble servant of those she loved, never happier than when surrounded by those she treasured. Her circle of love extended up and down Blairton Road to fifty years' worth of neighbors and children, many of whom regard her as a second mom or grandmother.
Carolyn's other interests and passions included Bible study, reading, sewing and needlework, making killer pimento cheese, dogs and cats, all varieties of ice cream, the Washington Redskins, and shopping for bargains at Bed, Bath, and Beyond!
She was preceded in death by her parents, Loyd and Ruby Stiteler. She is survived by her husband Bob of Springfield; her son Bill (Edna) of Savannah, GA; her son Chris (Ingrid) of Springfield; five grandchildren, Rachel Gleason George, Jon Gleason, Erika Gleason McKellopp, Lee Gleason, and T.J. Gleason; six great-grandchildren, Kate, Matthew, and Daniel George, and Anna, Ben, and Drew Gleason. She is also survived by her brother, William L. Stiteler, Jr. of Waynesboro.
A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Bible Church of Springfield at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 4, with visitation immediately afterwards. The graveside service will be held the following day in Clifton Forge.
