Of Annandale, on January 24. Beloved wife of Rufus H. Shumate Jr., LTC, USA (Ret.) for over 44 years; mother of Rufus (Shawn) H. Shumate III, MAJ, USA, the late Philip Shumate, Brian (Amanda) Shumate, and Amy (Nathan) Rodgers; grandmother of Alexis, Nathan, Addison, Nicholas, and Logan; daughter of Lucy and the late Philip Henshaw Jr., COL, USA (Ret.); sister of Barbara Munera and Beth Carty; and also survived by her dear dog Lucky.

From Army daughter to Army wife, Carol lived in many different places— including Hawaii, Ft. Knox, KY, Atlanta, GA, and Germany— before settling in Northern Virginia, where she worked as an elementary school teacher at St. Ann Catholic School and then Concert Hall Manager at George Mason University. She enjoyed golfing, scuba diving, spending time at Virginia Beach, and traveling overseas. Above all else, Carol was kind and generous, and loved her family, friends, and pets.

Friends welcome at the Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield, on Thursday, January 29 from 6-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Annandale, on Friday, January 30 at 11 am followed by a reception at the school. Carol will be laid to rest in West Point, NY the first week of February. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation to Friends of VA Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center (www.beachpetpals.org) or Washington Regional Transplant Community (www.beadonor.org).
