Dorothea Joyce "Joyce" Downey

On December 22, 2012 in Fairfax Inova Hospital. Beloved wife for 51 years of Mortimer L Downey; mother of Stephen and Christopher Downey, grandmother of Jonathan, Michael, Alexander, Addysen and Hailey Downey. She was a graduate of Syracuse University and of the Physical Therapy Program at Columbia University. For many years she served as a Physical Therapist in various school systems, including nearly 20 years in Loudoun County. She described her career as “especially rewarding to work on integrating children with physical disabilities into mainstream education,” and many children of all school ages benefitted from her care. She was very proud of being the christening sponsor of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Katherine Walker and maintained regular contact with its captain and crew. In retirement, she had many friends, including a dedicated walking group in Vienna and she devoted time to gardening, home improvement, photography, travel and care of her grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield Vienna on Saturday, December 29th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
