On July 14, 2016, my brother Glenn passed away peacefully of natural causes.
Glenn was born in the old Alexandria hospital, in what is now Old Town Alexandria, on September 14, 1951. He was the oldest of five children of Benjamin and Dollie (maiden name Combs) Norfolk.
Glenn first lived with his parents in an apartment above The Norfolk General Store, which was owned by our father’s family, in Fairfax Virginia. I remember our father saying that when someone they knew well would come into the store, Glenn would practice throwing and catching apples or potatoes or other various round fruits or vegetables with these family friends; our father felt that was an early sign of Glenn’s enthusiasm for baseball.
As Glenn’s siblings began to arrive, they moved to a house in Alexandria, Virginia. Glenn attended Weyanoke Elementary School, Edgar Allan Poe Immediate School and Thomas Jefferson High School, all in Alexandria, Virginia. Glen graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, class of 1969.
In his early school years, Glenn was a member of the Annandale Little League. Our father encouraged his ball playing, he himself an avid baseball fan. Many a summer day our entire family, parents and siblings, would be at the Little League ball field at the intersection of Little River Turnpike and Braddock Road, to watch Glenn play ball. Glenn played on several Little League teams; two known sponsors were Roy’s Beef Grill and Rocky’s Cleaners. Glenn was an accomplished pitcher and was picked repeatedly to be a member of the Annandale Baseball All-star teams.
In high school Glenn’s attention turned to automobiles, especially “muscle cars”. While in high school, Glenn, with help from his friends, refurbished a 1955 Chevy, which he drove for several years with great pride. He owned several classic cars through-out high school which he always kept in immaculate condition. One of his favorites was a 1970 straight shift GTO convertible.
During Glenn’s senior year at TJ, he participated in the Education/Careers program. He went to work part-time for the U. S. Federal Government, Department of Commerce. Glenn then transferred to the Department of Defense, and finally he worked as a civilian for the US Army, where he worked his way up to the position of Director for Europe/Africa, US Army Security Assistance Command.
Glenn’s marriage to Lou (maiden name Bailey) Norfolk, ended in divorce, they had one daughter, Angela Norfolk. Glenn later married Susan (maiden name Gardner) Norfolk and they had two sons, Thomas (Tommy) and William (Billy) Norfolk.
Arrangements under the direction of Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield, VA.
