

Ida was born in Munich, Germany, where she met her husband, Thirston Gilbert. Their enduring love and commitment were evident in almost 65 years of marriage. Together, they created a life filled with shared joys, laughter, and unwavering support.
Ida found immense pleasure in the simple yet profound aspects of life. She had a passion for travel, cooking, gardening, and her cats.
Her husband, CSM Thirston Gilbert was stationed around the globe affording Ida the opportunity to visit places such as Taiwan, Holland, China, and Hawaii to name a few. In experiencing these cultures, she expanded her knowledge of international cuisine.
Her culinary skills were a testament to her love for cooking, and she delighted in preparing meals that brought her family together around the table. In cooking, she enjoyed experimenting with, and mastering, a variety of styles: German, Southern/Soul Food, and Chinese. Gardening with her husband, Thirston, brought about a bounty of fruits, vegetables, and herbs that made it into her delicious recipes.
Ida’s cats were unique companions with distinct personalities that matched each part of her life. They played an important role in bringing her joy and comfort.
Ida Gilbert grew up during a time of world conflict and despite lacking a formal education, she achieved numerous successes in her life. She was self-taught in many ways to include learning the English language.
Ida Gilbert is preceded in death by her husband, Thirston Gilbert.
Ida is survived by her children Christian and Linda Gilbert, daughter-in-law Cheryl Gilbert, and grandchildren, Chase and Cameron Gilbert. Ida Gilbert's legacy lives on through the memories of those whose lives she touched. Her warmth, kindness, and zest for life will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Ida’s Arlington Cemetery Funeral service, where she will be laid to rest with her husband, CSM Thirston Gilbert will be held on Wednesday, May 8th, 2024 at 11 am.
Participants should meet the family at 10:30am in the Funeral Queuing Area. From there, we will proceed together to the site of the service. The link to Arlington Cemetery is included below.
