Joel Edwards Traylor Jr., of Alexandria, Virginia, entered into eternal life on Tuesday January 7, 2025 with his loving wife, Sandra, and two sons by his side. Born on December 2, 1944, in Los Angeles, California, Joel lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his faith, and his country. Joel was the son of Dorothy Mullen and Joel Edwards Traylor Sr. He pursued a distinguished education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of San Francisco in 1966 and later a Juris Doctor from George Mason University in 1997.
Joel dedicated much of his career to the United States Navy, working with the Naval Sea Systems Command as an engineer and physicist. He was particularly proud of his work designing, maintaining and modernizing the defense structures on battleships, aircraft carriers, and toward the end of his career, submarines; ensuring these iconic vessels remained ready to serve their country. Joel proudly received the Meritorious Civilian Service award in 1991 for his contributions in support of Operations Desert Storm/Desert Shield. He also received the Superior Civilian Service Award in 1994 for his consistently outstanding service to the Department of the Navy and the Naval Sea Systems Command as Senior Manager of the Ship Survivability Division.
Over the course of his career, he had the opportunity to travel internationally and was able to see the world including trips to Europe and the Middle-East.
After retiring from the Naval Sea Systems Command, Joel matriculated to the School of Law at George Mason University, embarking on a second career as a lawyer. He joined the firm Tate & Bywater and later opened a private practice specializing in family law.
Outside of his professional achievements, Joel enjoyed a vibrant and fulfilling personal and spiritual life. He was a fan of the Washington Nationals, and held season passes for many years. He was also an avid horse racing enthusiast, delighting in family trips to Charles Town and Saratoga Springs to watch the races. Joel was also a passionate reader who found joy in exploring new ideas through books. A devoted animal lover, he cared deeply for his neighborhood's feral cat population, rescuing many over the years and providing them with safe, loving homes.
Joel is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra Traylor and their two sons, Joel Edwards Traylor III and Gabriel Traylor. He also leaves behind his sons’ wives and children, Katie Desmond with daughter Starla, and Marcy Traylor with children Ashlen, Nolan, and Montgomery Burtz, to whom Joel joyfully assumed the role of Grandpa in 2006.
Joel's life was defined by his intellect, compassion, and unwavering love and support for his family and community. He will be remembered as a loving husband, a proud father, and a kind-hearted soul who brought light to everyone he met.
A memorial celebration will be held this Spring at the Traylor residence.
