On Wednesday, March 15th, 2023, Jonathan B. O’Connell passed away in his home in Springfield, Virginia, at the age of 51. Jon was a kind-hearted, fun-loving human being who will be sorely missed by friends and family alike.
Born July 9th, 1971 in Niagara Falls, NY, to Andrew and Mary O’Connell. Jon spent his formative years in Maryland, Connecticut, and New Jersey before settling in Northern Virginia, where he met and married the former Ms. Guisela Anez on February 14th, 2007. A member of the Chantilly High School Class of 1990, he attended Northern Virginia Community College before joining the professional workforce. Jon always had one or two jobs at any given time, and was known for his resourcefulness and work ethic. Most notably, he managed a store for the Papa John’s restaurant chain, and was subsequently promoted to Regional Manager. Later in life, he worked for the local Home Depot as the store’s Receiving Manager prior to resigning due to a medical condition.
Jon was an outgoing, charismatic soul who had a knack for making everyone around him happy. He saw the good things in life, and did not complain. Jon found joy in spending time with his family and friends, watching sports on TV, or enjoying a barbeque by the pool. He could talk for hours about football, baseball or NCAA basketball, but his favorite topic was his beloved NY Giants. He loved music, and could tell you something unique and interesting concerning every major band over the past 40 years. He did not find fault with others and was loyal and true to all who were fortunate to know him. No family get- together will be the same without his presence and friendship.
Jon is preceded in death by his father, Andrew O’Connell. He is survived by his wife Guisela, his mother, Mary, his three brothers Terrence, Andrew and Christopher, and several nieces and nephews. He leaves behind his beloved dog “Junior,” which was taken in as an abused stray and became his best friend.
A service in Jon’s honor will be held on Friday, March 24th at 1:30 P.M. at St. John Neumann’s Catholic Church in Reston, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jon’s name to the Global Outreach charity in Tanzania at globaloutreachtanzania.org.
