She was born in Madrid to Maximilian Manuel Velasco and Maria del Pilar Ginar Rodriguez on July 14, 1933. She attended nursing school in Madrid and London, graduating in 1952 with a nursing degree from the Universidad de Madrid. While working in Madrid as a nurse she met Steve Vejcik Jr. of Owosso, MI who was enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. They married on April 23, 1962, and came to the States shortly thereafter. They were stationed in a number of different states while Steve completed his Master’s degree and attended Officer Training School. Together they had three children: Steve Vejcik, III (Darla DeWolff); Sonia Garrett (William); and Scott Vejcik (Amy). She is preceded in death by her husband, Steve, who passed away on July 4, 1989. In addition to her three children, she is survived by her 13 grandchildren, and her sister Maria del Victoria Doherty. Some of her happiest moments were when she was surrounded by her family, especially her three children.
Maria worked most of her life as a nurse, in both surgical and clinical settings. She spent her free time as a consummate reader and student of history until her vision began to deteriorate. She also volunteered in many different capacities including Meals on Wheels and women’s clinics. She was a devoted Catholic who actively participated in weekly Adoration.
Funeral services will be held at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Annandale, Virginia on Friday, October 21, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. She will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date joining her husband to whom she was devoted for her entire life along with his memory. The family is comforted in knowing that she is now resting peacefully with him.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations in memoriam of Maria C. Vejcik to any of the following charities:
