Randy was a good friend and colleague. We first became acquainted on a train to Baltimore on the way to attend a meeting for the then Topographic Engineering Center. It was then, over a dozen years ago, that we learned of our common interest in Civil War military history and our similar outlook on work and play. Together we traveled the area visiting sites related to the conflict and discussing possible GIS projects. He introduced me to the idea of battlefield preservation and was always excited about sharing his books with me and looking at what I had collected. I deeply regretted leaving the area to move out west, but we maintained contact through the years sharing life events and plans. Recently our correspondence had increased with a plan to visit at some point soon. He will be missed. Weidan and Oliver, your loss will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

My sincerest condolences to the Swanson family.  Randy will be missed by all of us at the Army Geospatial Center.  Randy was always respectful and helpful to his coworkers.  He was an excellent technical expert in the geospatial science field and that talent will be missed.  He was a consummate professional and a wonderful person.

I did not now Randy that well, but what I did know was he was a kind and always welcoming person.  He always had a smile and a "how you doin'" to share when passing him in the hallway at work.  He was truly a good person.

Even though I interacted with Randy only a few times, I quickly realized that he was a loving father and husband, a family man.  I saw Randy and Weidan only four days before his passing... still can't believe he is no longer around.  Rest in peace, and my prayers are with Weidan and Oliver.
