He was born on March 10, 1955, in Rapid City, SD to Roy Hibbs Jr and Norma Dickerson Hibbs. He is survived by his mother, Norma Hibbs, his uncle, Tom Dickerson, his sister, Cynthia Mohrmann, and her husband, George Mohrmann, his nephew, Barrett Mohrmann, and his wife, Eleanor Mohrmann, and his great niece, Charlotte Mohrmann.
His many interests included mountain climbing, hiking, sea-glass collecting and jewelry, photography, and astronomy. He loved riding his motorcycle across the country, until his illness prohibited him from riding. Virgil lived the life that he wanted, without regrets, and was completely committed to the natural world and the adventures it offered, whether hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, standing in the surf of Key West, or travelling the world to comb beaches for sea glass.
His ashes will be spread in Glacier National Park on the pass that separates the two halves of the park (the Road to the Sun), as he had requested. This was his favorite park where he travelled many times, including in 2017 for the total solar eclipse.
His service will consist of an informal gathering where his family and friends can talk, share stories, and pay tribute to Virgil. Family and friends are invited to gather at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield on Sunday, Aug. 15, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm
